Winter Energy Saving Tips

9/12/2024

As winter begins on December 21st, many of us will see colder temperatures and higher utility bills. But with a few simple adjustments and energy-saving hacks, you can stay warm without the high costs.

Winter Energy Savings Tips

Energy Hacks: Small Changes, Big Savings

Sometimes, the smallest changes make the biggest difference. Start by turning off lights and appliances when they're not in use. This practice extends beyond the obvious items like lamps and televisions – don't forget about kitchen appliances, fans, and even your computer.

Another sneaky culprit? "Phantom" energy use. This occurs when electronics remain plugged in, silently drawing power even when not in use. Make sure to unplug devices to help keep that energy bill down.

Insulate and Repair Windows

Windows are a major source of heat loss in homes, especially those not insulated for cold weather. Make sure to seal gaps, apply weatherstripping to movable parts, and use thermal curtains to keep your home warmer. These small adjustments help prevent heat from escaping and cold air from entering.

Maintain Your Heating Systems

Schedule routine service for home heating systems.

Regularly clean the flue vent of wood and pellet burning heaters and clean the inside of the appliance with a wire brush periodically to ensure that it is heating efficiently.

Dirty filters reduce airflow, making your system work harder and your energy bills rise. Check your filter monthly and replace it when dirty but be sure to change it at least once every three months to keep your heating system running efficiently.

Program and Adjust Your Thermostat

Use a programmable thermostat to heat your home only when needed. This ensures that you're not paying for extra heat when no one’s home. You can also manually adjust the thermostat to lower your heating costs when you're away for the day.

Lower Water Heating Costs

Keep the temperature of the water heater to the warm setting (120°F). This will not only save energy, it will also help avoid scalding.

Lower Holiday Lighting Costs

Use light-emitting diode (LED) holiday light strings to reduce the cost of decorating the home for the winter holidays.

Use Ceiling Fans to Circulate Warm Air

Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer. Set your fan to rotate clockwise at a low speed to push warm air down from the ceiling, helping keep you comfortable without raising the temperature.
