DAYTON, Ohio – Chaminade Julienne High School completed its seventh annual “Unity in the Community” campaign with rival Carroll High School by presenting the $1,000 Unity Award to the University of Dayton “Active Minds” chapter at halftime of the Jan. 12 men’s basketball game in the CJ gym.
CJ and Carroll partner with Solvita Blood Center and Universal 1 Credit Union by hosting campus blood drives and alternating the selection of a charity to receive the Unity Award. Universal 1 Engagement Partner Kristen Marshall presented the $1,000 check to UD Active Minds Chapter Co-President Julia Lindenschmidt and Secretary Kaitlyn Lancia.
Active Minds is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization supporting mental health awareness and education for young adults. Chapter members encourage their classmates by providing opportunities to learn about, talk about, and seek help for mental health issues.
“The national organization helps us with programming and getting connected to other chapters,” said Julia. “We’re an outlet for students. We have activities at our meetings and educate them about mental health. It’s acknowledging symptoms, keeping in touch, and being able to know how to respond when someone comes to them.”
CJ began the 2023 Unity Campaign with its Feb. 24, 2023 Unity Blood Drive. It was sponsored by the Student Government and totaled 66 donors. Carroll followed with 55 donors at its March 29, 2023 Unity Blood Drive. The rivals combined for 121 donors, 95 donations, and 56 first time donors.
Carroll chose the ?“Food for the Journey Project” as the 2022 Unity Award recipient. CJ chose the 2023 recipient and hosted the presentation.
Helping present the Unity Award were CJ Principal Greg Mueller, CJ Student Government advisor and blood drive coordinator Angela Ruffolo, and CJ Student Government members Kayden Routson, Kristin Wright, Anna Weinel, Jordyn Pulaski, Bella Taylor, Mickinna Williams, Brailyn Rogers, Diondra Casey, Will Robertson, and Alaina Baker; Carroll High Principal Matt Sableski, Carroll blood drive coordinator Laura Wright, Athletic Director Scott Molfenter, Universal 1’s Kristen Marshall, and Solvita’s Donna Teuscher.
