Know Fraud, No Fraud: Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Every day, scammers find new ways to target consumers through text messages, emails, phone calls, and even social media. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a good reminder that a few simple habits can go a long way toward protecting your personal information and your money.

Recently, Rob Rutkowski, Ohio Department of Financial Institutions (ODFI) Deputy Superintendent for Credit Unions, joined WSYX ABC 6 in Columbus, OH, to warn about the cybersecurity threats consumers face nowadays and share practical steps everyone can take to stay safe online. Rutkowski reported that Ohio ranked 8th among states in the nation for scams, with overall losses nationwide amounting to 21 billion dollars each year.

While fraudsters' tactics continue to evolve, the fundamentals of cybersecurity remain the same:

  • Keep Your Software Updated

Software updates ensure critical security patches designed to protect your devices from newly discovered vulnerabilities are installed. Whether it's your smartphone, tablet, computer, or web browser, keeping your software up to date can easily strengthen your defense against scammers.

  • Create Strong Passwords

Strong passwords are an important first line of defense. Complex letter sequences and special characters are no longer working as effectively to prevent scammers from accessing your information. Consider using longer passwords or passphrases that combine multiple words unique to each account. The more letters, the better. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple websites and applications.

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of protection by requiring additional verification should your password be compromised. Even if someone obtains your login credentials, MFA can help prevent unauthorized access to your accounts.

  • Report Scams Immediately

Act quickly if you suspect a scam has targeted you. By reporting fraudulent activity right away, you can help limit any potential losses and may prevent others from becoming victims.

To keep you and your money safe, here are additional best practices to keep in mind:

  • Verify Rental Listings

Scammers frequently steal photos from legitimate property listings to create fake rental opportunities. Research the property address online, compare listings across multiple sites, and be cautious of requests for payment through wire transfers, gift cards, or cash apps.

  • Watch for Urgent Messages

Scammers often create a sense of urgency in their emails or text messages, claiming your account has been locked or that immediate action is required. Avoid clicking any links they may provide. Instead, log in directly through the U1 Mobile App or by visiting our website.

  • Avoid Over-the-Phone Pressure

Fraudsters can impersonate financial institutions, government agencies, trusted organizations, or a loved one or family member. If someone pressures you to act immediately or requests sensitive information, hang up and contact the organization directly through a verified phone number.

  • Use Card Controls

If you notice suspicious activity or want added peace of mind, card controls in the U1 Mobile App let you quickly freeze or unfreeze your debit or credit card.

Staying One Step Ahead of Fraud

Cybersecurity Awareness Month reminds us that online safety requires ongoing attention. Strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, phishing awareness, and verifying requests before sharing information can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of fraud.

At Universal 1 Credit Union, we're committed to helping our members protect what matters most. Stay informed with U1's Security Center and review recent fraud alerts to keep your accounts safe.
